Big thanks to DJ Tripp for having me come down and spin
at the Blue Lagoon.
It was a little daunting following Tripp on the decks. Besides the fact that he's been DJing for 15 years, and is amazing at what he does, he was also playing only the best mash-ups, so the crowd was accustomed to instant gratification. I wasn't sure they'd be willing to wait for a blend to evolve.
Lately, I've been pursuing the promoters of various goth/industrial clubs in San Francisco, and trying to prove to them that just because I mix my sets on vinyl, it doesn't mean the music can't be as evil as the stuff other industrial DJs play (There seems to be a prevalent assumption that if a DJ is actually mixing and blending, then he must be playing house or hip-hop). That must have been still resonating in my mind somewhere, because although I hadn't planned it, my first set wound up drifting toward the industrial genre. For my second set, I made a decision early on to play popular tracks and crowd pleasers - happy, bouncy, familiar.
